The gap is not subtle. Even at the top of the dedicated-team band, you get a full-time squad with a lead for less than the cost of freelancers at part-time availability — and you get it two months sooner than an in-house hire.

Where each model fails
Cost and speed are easy to compare. Failure modes decide whether you regret the choice in month four.
- In-house fails on timing. You hire for a roadmap that shifts; a $200k engineer is now working on something you would not have hired for. Layoffs cost morale and severance.
- Freelancers fail on coordination. Three individuals with three coding styles, no shared review standard, and no one accountable for architecture. The classic symptom is three state-management approaches in one app. The second is a key contributor taking a better contract mid-sprint.
- Dedicated teams fail on the wrong partner. Junior engineers presented as senior, a "tech lead" who is really an account manager, or timezone overlap that turns out to be two hours.
